#56: Ridley Crossbow on the way

Filed under: Cyclocross — Ryan @ 12:05 pm

I went ahead an ordered a Ridley Crossbow frame to arrive early next week (delayed due to the Thanksgiving holiday) [11/29 update, the frame is backordered and now will not ship until tomorrow]. I went slightly smaller than my other bikes due to high standover height of the Ridley bikes. I think I was too stretched out on my Cannondale, so the shorter top tube is a non-issue.

Road bikes:

  • 2007 Kuota Kebel, XL. Seat tube 58cm / 54cm [c-c]. Top tube [c-c] 57.5 cm. Standover 81 cm.
  • 2001 Trek 5200. Seat tube 62 cm / 59.3cm [c-c]. Top tube [c-c] 59.8 cm. Standover 82.1 cm

Cyclocross bikes

  • 1999 Cannodale XS600. Seat tube 58 cm. Top tube [c-c] 59 cm. Standover 85.1 cm
  • 2008 Ridley Crossbow / 56 cm. Top tube [c-c] 56 cm. Standover 85 cm.

I also went ahead and changed out the tires and bar tape on my Cannondale to black (my old green Michelin muds were worn). The color scheme is a bit more subdued from the blue-yellow-green-red combo I was rolling with before.

#54: new cyclocross bike?

Filed under: Cyclocross — Ryan @ 11:26 pm

At this point, I am at a crossroads. I had been saving money up to buy a TT bike, but prospect of updating my cross rig is very intriguing. My plan right now is to buy a cross bike from a teammate (for the parts) and move everything over to a Ridley Crossbow. I think once I finish that build, I will have a 19.0 - 19.5 lb. bike that is more race ready than my 23# Cannondale XS800. The front shock on this bike is a nice idea, but adds a lot of weight to the bike and most of the time, I really don’t need it. I plan to demote this bike to my B-bike and have it ready to go in the pits at KC and other races this year.

I will make the final decision tomorrow, but I am about 90% sure I am going to do this. It will be a good day - after - Thanksgiving project….

On another note, I transistioned from using the 1&1 built-in WordPress blog to using the more customizable install it yourself WordPressblog.  So far I have been only successful at making the header image work.  Eventually I plan to have a set a images rotating on the header, etc.  Don’t be surprised to see radical changes each time you check this out.

#53: Cross Polar downloads

Filed under: Cyclocross — Ryan @ 4:45 pm

After putting the Polar CS600 on my road bike, I was left with an extra Polar speed sensor for my S720. So I put it on my cross bike. I have never known my speed while riding on my cross, now I can download a complete history.

Here is the curve from Nashville #3 (11/10/07):

Here is the curve from Outdoors cross (11/11/07):

The most interesting thing about these curves is the steady drop in heart rate due to fatigue. Cross is an intense sport, but your legs just can’t put out the watts near the end of the race and the heart rate (and speed) just start to drop lower and lower.

#52: Nashville Cross #3 & Outdoors XC race.

Filed under: Cyclocross — Ryan @ 9:56 pm

Another weekend in the books. I catted up to CX3 and got to see first hand the gap between a 4 and 3 race. My Saturday race was up in Nashville. This was race #3 of a 4 race series up in Nashville. I rode up with Cal, who ended up winning our (CX3) race. I ended up having a host of problems, but the race was a lot of fun.

After switching to my double chain guard setup earlier in the week, I decided to take some advice about avoiding chain drops and shortened my chain to an extreme on Friday night. When in my 27 tooth in the back, the rear derailleur was basically horizontal. That did worry me a bit, but I did not have much time to change it back, so I went with it. About 1/3 of the way into a practice lap (the first), my chain let go. Since I left my spare chain back in my garage, I thought that was it. Walking back, I started asking around for a 9-speed chain. No one had one (and the nearest shop was too far away to be practical). Between 2-3 racers, I was able to put together short piece of SRAM chain, my Ultegra chain, and two different brands of master links. I was back in business (and back to the same length chain I had before).

The course started off with a nice stretch of pavement up a slight grade before heading up on to the grass and around to a sand pit/box. The course wound through one side and back through the other side of the sand requiring a dismount. Once back on there were a few high speed grass ups and downs and then on to a downhill pavement section. After getting up to 19-20 mph for a 1/4 mile, there was a set of over-height boards to greet you at the bottom of the hill. From there, around the ball field on the grass and then up and down a few short hills and around to a long off-camber ride. Off and on the pavement and around some loose stuff take you around most of the course. Near the end of the laps are two dismounts with large diameter telephone poles (2x) and twisty grass course between.

The start of the CX3 was calm with everyone riding together up the paved section. At the sandbox, I started to make some mistakes which caused me to lose touch. I ended up getting bogged down in the sand on the easier side of the pit and unclipping the wrong side. That saw me chasing from the 2nd minute on. I was trying to stay competitive but ended up loosing a bunch of time when I failed to unclip my SPD coming into a fast dismount at the telephone pole barrier (1st one). If you have ever done this when drawing your right foot between your left and the frame you end up putting a pedal into your right Achilles and throwing your bike up in the air. After dusting my self off I got back going again.

About two laps later, I came off one of the curbs and pinch flatted my rear tire. Unfortunately, my wheels were up at the pit about 1 mile away. I rode up to the pit and changed the rear wheel while several master’s racers passed me (they started 1 minute back). I got back going again only to discover I forgot to reattach my rear cantilever… at this point my race became about chasing down the master’s racers that passed me. I think I ended up 5th in the CX3 race, which I think was last. I had a good time (in general) and some much needed practice at speed.

On Sunday, I raced the Outdoors Inc Cyclocross A-race. The course was pretty much the same as 2 years ago (last and only time I have done this race) except in reverse. The course features a lot of high speed grass and hard pack dirt, but also a lot of up and down on the bank from the lower part of the park up to the road level. The A-race featured former National Champ Frank McCormick and a bunch of local stars.

The start went fairly well for me up until the steeper pitches of the 2nd climb up the bank. For whatever reason, I had lots of trouble getting up that bank on that and every other lap. My quads just didn’t have it (heavy volume last week or a heavy week of weights might have something to do with it, but it is hard to tell). I settled into a pace I could maintain and ended up bringing back a few riders but also lost a few places at the same time. I don’t know what my final placing ended up, but I ended up getting lapped by Frank and 2nd / 3rd place near the end (saving me one lap of pain). I ended up 3rd in the 30-39 age group, but that was de facto since the was only 3 in that age group anyway.

Either in a stoke of delusion or genius, I signed up for Cyclocross Nationals (Masters 30-34) this morning. It is up in Kansas City this year (only 7-8 hours from Memphis), so I figure I will give it a shot. I raced at Nationals in 2001 when it was in Baltimore (B-race) and the experience is worth it. I know I won’t be last.

I ended up installing my Polar 720 speed sensor on my cross bike. During the race you really can’t watch it except for the straight aways / road sections, but it is helpful for gaging effort on these sections. Although looking down and seeing 15 mph when your lungs are about to pop is a bit strange. I might post up some of those curves later.

#51: Single-ring redux

Filed under: Cyclocross — Ryan @ 10:54 pm

After the 2nd race at Jackson, I decided to slightly rethink my single-ring setup. I suffered two chain drops in that race and don’t want to have a repeat performance.

The old setup was the Excel Sports single-ring kit which included a 42 tooth ring, an outer chainguard ring, and a 3rd eye chainwatcher. That setup worked pretty well with the exception that the 42 tooth is bit rough on some of the steeper climbs. I changed it to a 39-tooth ring and there began the problems. I lowered the chain watcher a bit, but couldn’t get the clamp tight with the large downtube in the way and dropped my chain twice.

The new plan was to scrap the chain watcher and add an inner guard. The setup looks cleaner and I am hopeful it will work well. We’ll see at the races this weekend.

This weekend, I plan to race the Saturday race up in Nashville and return to Memphis for the Outdoors Inc. race on Mud Island. Oh, and I got my CX3 category upgrade earlier this week, so I will have to step up my game.

My race schedule is looking like this at this point:

  • 11/10. Nashville cross #3
  • 11/11. Outdoors Inc cyclocross (Memphis)
  • 12/1. Greenway Farms cyclocross (Chattanooga). [MAYBE]
  • 12/14. Nationals / Masters 30-34 (Kansas City). [50% chance at this point]
  • 1/5&6. Columbia #1 & #2 (Columbia, Tenn) [??]
  • 1/13. Tenn state championship (Nashville)
  • 1/19 & 20. Columbia #3 & #4

#50: Volume weeks

Filed under: Training — Ryan @ 6:30 am

Well the off-season training is progressing well. This week was a long one in terms of hours, I logged nearly 14 hours of training. That level is not that unusual for me in the mid-season, but it has been weeks since I have exceeded 7 or 8 hours…

On Saturday night, my team (Memphis Velo) had their annual end-of-season party. It was a good time and nice to see everyone without helmets on for once. During the awards, I was given the “Most Active Racer” award.

MV_mostactiveracer

I did have a big season this year, logging 34 USCF events over 13 weekends. It was also a long season running from March until mid-September.

Once you factor in cyclo-cross racing, I will probably be racing nearly every month in 2007. In 2008, probably only get a true break in February.

As for now, I will be mostly focused on next year (with some diversions for cross, of course) with a heavier emphasis on weight training for the next month or so. Currently, I am on week #7 of a 4 month long program. The current mode is 4×10 for the sets consisting mostly of multiple muscle group exercises using a barbell (i.e. front & back squats, good mornings, lunges, straight leg & reg. deadlifts, bench press, upright & bendover rows, etc). Andrea, with her background in powerlifting and her sports science education, has provided the template for this and we are both working through the program at the same time. I can already see I am getting stronger and leaner while maintaining a similar body weight. The addition of weight training (which I haven’t done since 2001-2002 winter really), plus some more specific work on the bike in the late winter should make more ready for racing Category III next year.

I am also due to get some new parts to work on my cross bike early this week. I am going to replace the 3rd eye chain watcher thing with a different brand that seems more substaintial and easier to clamp on my Cannondale (the down tube is very oversized on my XS800, so it was hard to tighten the hose clamp on the 3rd eye). I also go an inner chain ring guard and extra long bolts coming in, which might be the way I tame my chain on my single ring setup in any case. I’ll post up photos, etc once I get that together. I need to get that going for the race this weekend. Outdoors, Inc is having their annual Mud Island cyclocross race this Sunday (11/11).
